Main Sequence looks to be heading to the Epsom Derby

Lingfield Derby TrialThe Epsom Derby seems almost certain now for Main Sequence (20/1 to win the Epsom Derby) after he maintained his unbeaten record in Saturday's Lingfield Derby Trial. David Lanigan's three-year-old was stepping up to a mile and a half for the first time and also switching from handicap company to Group class, but he secured his fourth win from as many starts with a fine display under Ted Durcan.

Racing manager Alan Cooper, after his latest success, said "He won very nicely and both Ted and David were very happy with him. He quickened up nicely and one of the reasons we wanted to go to Lingfield was to see how he would be at that trip and it seemed to work out fine."

Cooper added: "It was a very good experience for Main Sequence and a very encouraging performance, so all being well, we'll be at Epsom on June 2. I think he deserves to run in the Derby. He's a progressive type and he's stepped up at every asking. We'll see what happens next. Obviously we've had some trials and there are more trials to come with the Dante, so I think one will have to evaluate the field a bit nearer the time."

A potential Derby rival is Cavaleiro and his trainer Marcus Tregoning has declared himself "delighted" with his third place finish in the Lingfield Derby Trial. He said: "I was delighted with his run and as I said before the race, we've had a slow time with him. It's been quite hard to get him ready and while he was ready enough to run, he is going to come on for it. "

"I believe the winner is going to run in the Derby and the runner-up could go as well, I don't know. Without the favourite, the Derby is quite an open race and they are entitled to do that if they want to. There's no decision about my horse. I think we'll just see how he comes back the next time he works and take it from there.”
