Denmark the underdogs against the Netherlands

Social Sharing:

DenmarkDenmark have played in four World Cups and Euro 2012 is their eighth appearance at the European Championships. As last-gasp replacements for banned Yugoslavia in 1992 Denmark (5/1 to win the match) even famously won the trophy.

That memory and the fact that they are the outside bet to progress from Group B should fire them up ahead of tonight’s clash with Holland (8/11 to win the match). They are now ranked the world's ninth-best team by Fifa and match-day two opponents Portugal sit behind in 10th. It is not without reason - they topped the Portuguese in qualifying for this tournament, and the last World Cup.

Of three matches between the two nations at either the European Championships or the World Cup, the Dutch (4/9 to score first) have won twice. The Danes needed penalties to win their Euro 92 semi-final. Outside of Denmark's penalty shoot-out win in 1992, they have not beaten the Dutch since 1967.

The Dutch scored the most goals (37) in qualifying of any team at Euro 2012 and have progressed from the group phase in each of the last six European Championships.  They scored the most goals (37) in qualifying of any team at Euro 2012 while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 12-goal haul (5/1 First Goal Scorer) was one short of the overall qualifying record.

Of any team at Euro 2012, only Greece (14) scored fewer goals than Denmark (12/5 to score first) in qualifying. They have lost 12 of 24 matches at European Championships, more than any other team in its history. Just two players in Denmark's 23-man squad have played at a previous European Championship.
