Upson unconcerned by Beckenbauer comments

Mathew Upson

Mathew Upson has responded to Franz Beckenbauer's comments about England's style in an emphatic manner saying "We will play the way that suits us best".

'Der Kaiser' launched an attack on Fabio Capello's sides tactics on Monday, accusing them of playing 'kick and rush football' and saying they had gone backwards since the Italian took charge.

Upson refused to be drawn into a war of words with the German legend but defended his manager saying there was no reason to question the way the Three Lions play. (England 8/1 to win)

"We will play the way that best suits us," said the West ham defender.

"We want to win matches so will play the style according to that".

"Whatever he thinks about our style of play is his opinion. If we are accused of kick and rush but win something, i don't think many people will complain."

Upson did however concede that England had been working hard on the training ground, trying to find the solutions to the mistakes they made on Saturday. He whole squad trained apart from the injured Ledley King and according to Upson manager Fabio Capello has a positive outlook on the situation.

"On Saturday he saw some things he was pleased with. I also think he saw some things he would want us to improve on."

Upson was also keen to state his claim to play against Algeria on Friday (England 2/9 to win the game), but admitted he would have to be patient.

"I am desperate to play my part. But i have to be patient, keep focussed and keep working hard in training."
