Roddick Gets The Better Of Federer In Miami

Andy Roddick pulled off the shock of the Miami Masters so far by overcoming world No.3 and the tour’s in-form player Roger Federer in three sets on Monday. This was the first time since 2008 that Andy Roddick has beaten the former world No.1 and only the third time in 24 career meetings (Andy Roddick 33/1 to win Miami Masters). Roddick served solidly in the first set but was unable to get anywhere near breaking Federer’s serve and so it went into a tie-break which Roddick took 7-4 after more solid serving and a crucial mini-break.

Federer looked to be on course to win the match in three sets when he broke Roddick three times in the second set to take it 6-1 and then had four break points at the start of the third, however Roddick once again delivered some huge serves when it really mattered and went on to win the deciding set 6-4. The American admitted, “The game that I played for the break in the third set was one of the best return games I’ve ever played. I think I hit four forehand winners. I played well tonight and served really well there at the end.”

Federer has been on superb form this season and could well have fallen foul of fatigue as all the matches he has played this year will have taken its toll on him. The Swiss had won his last three tournaments on the ATP Tour, however he will not make that four in a row this week as the clay court season edges ever closer (Roger Federer 10/1 to win the French Open). Roddick will now go on to face Juan Monaco in the next round after he defeat Gael Monfils in a three set contest and he will fancy his chances of using his powerful game to defeat the Argentinean on home soil.
