Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship - Preview

The world’s best tennis players will head to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship this week looking to win an event which celebrates its 20th anniversary. World No.1 Novak Djokovic has started this year in a similar vein to 2011 and after heroic performances in Melbourne en-route to winning his second successive Australian Open, he will return to action this week bidding for an incredible fourth title in a row here (Novak Djokovic 6/5 to win).

As the No.1 seed, the Serbian’s draw should be fairly straightforward until a potential semi-final encounter with Andy Murray. Murray doesn’t have the best of records here, with quarter-final appearances in 2008 and 2009 his best finishes in this event; however his best chance of beating Djokovic comes over this best of three set format, winning his last four hard court matches against the Serb in best of three set matches, without losing a set in the process. His loss in Melbourne last month also came after taking a two set to one lead (Andy Murray 4/1 to win).

The bottom half of the draw is also glittered with talent, with 16-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer the favourite to come through to the final (Roger Federer 5/2 to win). He is the four-time winner of this event in a five year stretch from 2003 to 2007 and he will be hoping to pick up the title here for the first time in five years. He made a good run to the final here last year before being beaten by Djokovic and will be encouraged by his start to the season winning 11 out of 13 matches, including a tournament victory in Rotterdam a fortnight ago.

Juan Martin Del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will also fancy their chances of going far this week after their stellar starts to the season. Del Potro won in Marseille this past week and may be slightly fatigued but he is definitely playing some of the best tennis on tour at the moment and will be intent on performing well in his first ever appearance here (Juan Martin Del Potro 9/1 to win). Tsonga has also only lost twice this year so far, winning the opening tournament of the season in Doha. He will try and use his sheer force to overpower his opponents in Dubai, as he looks to better his run to the second round in his only ever appearance here in 2010 (Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 11/1 to win).
