Upson could leave - Gold

Matthew Upson

West Ham United (11/4 to be relegated from the Premier League) co-chairman David Gold has admitted the club may be forced to sell defender Matthew Upson.

The England (10/1 to win Euro 2012) international, who scored for the Three Lions against old rivals Germany at the World Cup in South Africa this summer, could be sold by the Hammers if a substantial offer is made.

Upson's current contract runs out at the end of the season and Gold could be forced to sell the centre-back rather than letting the player walk out on a free next summer.

He said: "We want to keep Matt here, but at the same time we know we may have to sell him if he tells us he doesn't want to stay.

"We don't want to let him leave the club for nothing. It's a difficult balancing act and a dilemma for us.

"If someone came in and bid £6million or £7million for him, we would have to sell," he added.

Gold admitted that several clubs have shown an interest in signing the player but the club have not yet accepted that the player will definitely be moving on.
