Carragher calls for squad unity to stop the rot

Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has said Liverpool have no chance of emerging from the doldrums unless they pull together for a "massive" game against Wigan (Liverpool 1/3 draw 7/2 Wigan 10/1 match bets) in the Premier League at Anfield on Wednesday.

The former England international says there is little point and no tiime for his team-mates to feel sorry for themselves on the back of a disastrous run form and that they must get on with the job of raising spirits in the red half of Merseyside.

"We can't look for excuses," said Carragher. "That's the way it is at top-level football - we know that any little thing can get pounced upon and that's happening at the moment."

A 2-1 home defeat by Arsenal on Sunday means the Reds have slipped to seventh in the table and trail fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race to finish in the top four by five points.

However, Carragher feels victory over Latics and then basement club Portsmouth (Portsmouth 9/2 draw 13/5 Liverpool 4/7 match bets) at Fratton Park in the early fixture on Saturday could renew optimism.

He added on the official club website: "We'll just try and get three points on Wednesday and then move on to Portsmouth. We've got to look at ourselves and realise that we've got to do much better."
